He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 20, 1942, and was assigned to the 22nd Bombardment Squadron, 341st Bomb Group. He was serving as a navigator in General Claire Lee Chennault's 14th Army Air Force, on aircraft 42-53489, a B-25C Mitchell. He sailed for overseas on February 15, 1943. They were tasked with performing a sea sweep mission over the Gulf of Tonkin, on 15 Feb 1944, to be followed by attacking inshore bridges with an remaining bombs. Their plane was separated from 3 other planes on the mission, by poor weather conditions, his plane last seen near the coastline; they failed to return to the base at Yangkai, China, and none of the crew reported in. On 26 Feb, a message was received from French authorities in French Indo-China (Vietnam) stating that the plane had crashed near Do Len, killing all of the crew, which had been buried by the French. About the same time, intelligence reports indicated the Do Len Bridge had been damaged on or about 15 Feb, during an attack by a B-25, probably 42-53489. Note by Doy: based on a WW II map of French Indo-China, and the locations of the targets by this group of B-25s, it appears that the plane of Charles and the crew actually crashed in current-day Vietnam.
