He graduated from Ames High School and was a junior at Iowa State College when he entered military service in 1943. He was survived by his wife, his parents, and a brother. Following are excerpts from an obituary published in the Ames (Iowa) Tribune on April 2, 1945, contributed by Jeff Kregel: Funeral services for Second Lieutenant Harold K. Knight, who was killed at Camp Mackall last Thursday when a gun dropped from his pocket and discharged while he was working in the ordnance shop, were held Adams Funeral Home. Lt. Knight’s body was accompanied to Ames by Second Lieutenant Howard Ralston, of Earlham, a fellow officer of Lt. Knight at Camp Mackall. Lt. Ralston was a member of the same company as Lt. Knight in the 541st Parachute Regiment. Lt. Ralston, who attended Iowa State college at the same time Lt. Knight, praised the latter’s work in the army. “He had a platoon of his own which thought the world of him and through his interest in weapons, interested every member of his platoon. He was very well liked.” Lt. Knight a 1940 graduate of Ames High school, attended Iowa State college and was a junior at the time he entered the service. While in college, he was a member of Scabbard and Blade, the honorary military society and also was a member of the ROTC. He entered service in the spring of 1942 at Camp Roberts and was commissioned at Ft. Sill, Okla., in June 1944, and been a lieutenant in the parachute regiment from August 1944 to the time of his death. An expert on firearms, which had been his hobby for years, Lt. Knight and presented many demonstrations and lectures on the subject. On Nov. 6, 1943, he was married to Barbara Richter of Ames. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry H Knight of 123 S. Riverside. The father is a professor of entomology at the college.
