A carpenter living in Franklin, Warren County, New Jersey, he was married to Sarah Lunger, and they had six children - Elizabeth (b.1838), John (b.1840), James (b.1842), Lucinda (b.1845), Jacob (b.1847) and Guile R. (b.1849). Despite having a big family, he enlisted with a number of Lunger men from Hunterdon County to fight against the Confederacy and to preserve the Union. He was mustered into Company H, 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry with the rank of Sergeant on September 5, 1861. He was joined in Company H by three nephews - sons of his older brother John Bodine Lunger. They were Frederick (who was appointed as 2nd Lieutenant of the Company), Amos and William R. Another nephew, Isaac (brother of Amos, Frederick and William) enlisted and fought with the 15th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Henry B. Lunger's son, James R. Lunger, served in the 4th New York Infantry, having enlisted in New York City in May 1861, months before the rest of his family joined the war effort. The 4 Lungers moved out with their regiment and joined the Army of the Potomac. During the 1862 Peninsular campaign, and just after the regiment fought and sustained heavy casualties at the May 5, 1862 Battle of Williamsburg, Henry B. Lunger was promoted to 1st Sergeant of the Company. He then served as the Company's top enlisted soldier through the Spring and Summer of 1862, as the 8th New Jersey fought in the Seven Days Battles of June-July and in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run in August. When 1st Lieutenant Edwin C. Nichols was promoted to Captain of Company G on September 27, 1862, the command vacancies were filled the two Lungers. Henry was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, and his nephew Frederick was advanced from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant. The two Lungers served throughout the winter of 1862-1863, participating in the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and in the aborted "Mud March" on January-February 1863. By the end of April 1863 the year and a half in the field took it's told on Lieutenant Henry Lunger, and he resigned on April 22, 1863. (Sergeant Jacob Dier of Company A would be promoted to 2nd Lieutenant to fill the vacancy). Two of the younger Lungers would not finish their service with their fellow Hunterdon County men of Company H. 1st Lieutenant Frederick would resign due to disability right after the conclusion of the June-July 1863 Gettysburg Campaign. Nephew Amos Lunger would become a Sergeant before being transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps. He was serving in the VRC when he died of disease in July 1864. It was only William R. Lunger who would see the war through to it's conclusion in the 8th New Jersey, eventually re-enlisting before being honorably discharged in July 1865. Son James of the 4th New York was discharged in May 1863, having served a two year enlistment. Nephew Isaac was discharged due to disability in November 1863, having served a little over a year in the field. In all, 6 Lungers went to war, and 5 came back, a record that is matched by few New Jersey families. To this day, Henry B. Lunger's nephew Amos lies in a grave in Arlington National Cemetery
