In 1950, his body was exhumed and reburied at Riverview Cemetery in Monticello next to the resting place of his grandparents. Information found on ancestry.com from unnamed newspaper article: LOGANSPORT FLYER ON MISSING LIST IS DEAD LOGANSPORT, Ind., July 29 (Spl.)--Lieutenant John Steinwedel, 21, former Logansport high school basketball star, who has been missing in action over France since June 5, is dead, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Steinwedel, were notified Friday by the German government through the International Red. Cross. A fighter pilot, Lieutenant Steinwedel was flying a Thunderbolt as escort in a bomber raid on Amiens, France, preceding the invasion of the Normandy coast. He was born in Logansport February 23, 1923, and was a member of the Berry varsity basketball team in 1939, 1940 and 1941, serving as captain of the team in his senior year. He also was a member of the National Honor Society and was an Honor Rotarian. He was commissioned November 4, 1943. Surviving, besides the parents, is a brother, Courtland, of Logansport. U.S., World War II Draft Cards Young Men, 1940-1947, lists his residence as 1298 Market, Beaumont Apartment #8, Logansport, Indiana. Contact person listed as Alfred Steinwedel of same address. Employed by Wagner and Swendorf, 222 E. Melbourne, Logansport, Indiana as of 06/30/1942 registration date.
