Bierer, 21, a flying cadet, Brooklyn, N.Y. First Lieut. Walter H. Boyd, Long Beach, Calif. Corp. Artie M. Howard, Salyersville, Kentucky. Second Lieut. Carlyle C. Hoch, Newark, N.J. Second Lieut. Angus J. MacDonald, Los Angeles. Second Lieut. R. H. Keith of Menomimie, Wis., and Second Lieut. Leland A. Viar, 23, of Dunlap, Kan., were killed after a collision of two swift military planes near Natchitoches shortly before noon yesterday before the first phase of the Second – Third army maneuvers in Louisiana were halted. The planes crashed during a hot fight between Red and Blue army ships using the swift P-38 and P-40 fighters, the newest type of twin fuselage planes called the fastest in the world. Keith, flying a P-38, was attached to the 37th [sic – should be 27th] Pursuit Squadron, Selfridge Field, Detroit, temporarily based at Beaumont, Texas. His body was recovered late this afternoon and brought to the McCook funeral home, Shreveport, where funeral arrangements had not been completed. His widow lives at Durham, N.C. Viar's home station was at Windsor Locks, a new air base in New England. He was a member of the 57th Pursuit Squadron attached to the Eighth Pursuit Group, temporarily stationed at Barksdale Field, Shreveport, for duties with the Red army during the maneuvers.* He was flying a P-40. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Viar, Dunlop, Kan. Lieut. William K. Long of Glen Falls, N.Y., also flying in the 27th Pursuit Squadron, said he saw Keith's plane go down, but not until he landed his own P-38 in an open cotton field and ran to the wreck did he discover that his friend Keith was the victim. Long described a three-mile walk through the woods and a horseback ride a similar distance before he met a medical detachment which he ordered to return to pick up the body. * The author of the article obviously meant to report that Viar was a member of the 57th Pursuit Group (not squadron) which was then based at Windsor Locks Army Air Base (later named Bradley Field) in Connecticut. Apparently Viar was simply on detached service to the 8th Pursuit Group, which was temporarily based at Barksdale Field for the duration of the maneuvers.
