Description	:	Tucson, Ariz. - Memorial services for Rachel Haire Dye, formerly of Putney, will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 24th at Groton Union Cemetery. Father David Janes will officiate. Inurnment will follow under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. Rachel Haire was born on April 11, 1916, in Putney to Robert J. and Mabel (Sieh) Haire. She grew up in Putney and graduated from Groton High School. Rachel then attended Northern State Teachers College and taught in Huffton. She returned to Northern to obtain her degree and later moved to Santa Fe, N.M., to teach. Rachel enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve in March of 1943. She served as the first woman Marine to be posted at Camp Elliott in San Diego, Calif., and was commissioned 2nd Lt. in March of 1944. Following her discharge in November of 1945, she married Col. C.C. Dye on Oct. 6, 1945, in Washington, D.C. Rachel passed away Aug. 30, 2005, in Tucson, Ariz. Survivors include her husband, Col. Ret. C.C. Dye; her daughter, Angela Dye and husband Robert Mather of Phoenix, Ariz.; her sister, Angela Matthews of St. Louis, Mo.; her niece, Kathryn (Tom) Rucinsky of St. Louis, Mo.; and nephew, Thomas (Teresa) Matthews of Beulah, Wyo. Preceding her in death were her parents and brother, Robert. Family prefers memorials directed to Union Cemetery, 209 N. Main St., Groton, SD 57445 or to the charity of your choice.
