Richard Elias Grandpre was born Dec. 27, 1918, to Elias E. and Agnes (Martin) Grandpre at Turton, S.D. He attended schools in both Spink and Clark counties and graduated from Redfield High School in 1936. He farmed with his father for a short time after high school. Richard later attended Northern State Teachers College until being inducted into the U.S. Coast Artillery in 1941. He transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Richard was assigned to the 384th Bombardment Group and was the navigator on a B-17 bomber. Richard's airplane was shot down over Holland and he was held as a prisoner of war for 22 months, until the end of the war. After his release, he returned to the United States. Richard married Lois Mae Clocksin June 12, 1945, at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Minn. In 1947, Richard was commissioned a first lieutenant and was recalled into the Air Force Reserves during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge he returned to Aberdeen. Richard was employed with the Milwaukee Railroad for a short time. In 1947, he started working for the U.S. Postal Service. This service included appointments in various supervisory positions. He was later transferred to Sioux Falls and was the director of mail processing until his retirement in August of 1975. He then was employed as the business manager for Harmony Homes and was also engaged in real estate sales. Richard and Lois enjoyed many summers together at their cabin on Pickerel Lake. Lois passed away in April of 1988 and Richard continued to make Aberdeen his home. Richard married Wilma Sindelar August of 1990 at Aberdeen. Richard has been a resident of Mother Joseph Manor since February of 2004. Richard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many years, where he served on the Parish Council, was a eucharistic minister, lector, and served in the Evangelization Program. Richard was on the board of directors of the Adjustment Training Center and was a representative payee for several of the individuals served. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Benevolent Order of the Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ex-American Prisoners of War. Surviving Richard are his wife, Wilma of Aberdeen; two daughters, Nancy Loomis of Houston, Texas, and Janis (Dan) St. Martin of Eden Prairie, Minn.; three sons, David (Marcella) Grandpre of Minneapolis, Minn., Steven Grandpre of Chicago, Ill., and James (Bonnie) Grandpre of Aberdeen; four grandchildren, Erica Grandpre, George St. Martin, Stephan Grandpre and Sarah Grandpre; and one sister, Valois Miles. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lois, two brothers and one sister. Pallbearers will be George St. Martin, Stephan Grandpre, Dennis Nelson, Donn Grandpre, Rob Wanous and John Vanderhoek. Published in the Aberdeen News on 5/31/2006.
