Enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant on 6 August 1862 Commissioned in Company A, 89th Infantry Regiment Indiana at Wabash, Indiana. Died of exhaustion and disease while on guard duty at Fort Pickering, Tennessee on 25 Jul 1863. [From Wabash County History, pub. 1884 - pg. 211-A] Thomas J. Matlock was First Lieutenant of Company A, Eighty-ninth Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
