Clary, who enlisted in the Second Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry in April 1861 for the three month's service. He took part in the first battle at Bull Run on the 3rd of July following, and at the end of his term of service re-enlisted in the Thirty-fifth Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. After serving two years, he was honorably discharged for disability.
