Was struck by an automobile almost a year ago, widow, daughter and four sons survive him, was an officer in the Civil War. William H. Dodds over 78 years old, died at 12:10 o'clock this afternoon at his home, 746 Cherry street after being confined for several months. He was struck by an automobile on July 12, last year, while passing in front of a garage on South Main Street, advanced age and complications prevented a complete recovery. The funeral will be held at the home at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The Rev. W. A. Elliott, Pastor of the First Baptist Church will have charge. The body will be taken to Hoxie, Kansas, on Friday for burial. William Harvey Dodds was born September 19, 1838 in Jefferson County, Illinois and was married on March 31, 1872 to Maria E. Perry. The widow, one daughter Mrs. Fancheon Baxter of Grand Junction, Colorado and four sons, Dewitt Dodds of Ottawa, Homer Dodds of Primero, Colorado, Lute W. and William V. of Bonaparte, Iowa, survive, (the last two sons were by his first wife Katie Gaddis who died). Also surviving are a sister Mrs. Eleanor Sayer, La Belle, Missouri and three brothers, James Dodds of Kansas City, Kansas, John F. of Bonaparte, Iowa and Charles W. Dodds of Keosauqua, Iowa. Mr. Dodds came here about 1896, lived here ten years, was away until 1912 and since then has lived here. He came from Iowa. During the Civil War Mr. Dodds served as a Second Lieutenant in the Fourteenth Iowa Regiment for three years. **** Military service: Company F, 14th Iowa Infantry ∼LIEUTENANT W. H. DODDS Tuesday morning of this week, May 8, 1917, Lieut. W. H. Dodds, aged about 77, died at his home in Ottawa, Kansas, He was an officer in the Fourteenth Iowa Infantry during the Civil War, enlisting in the Hillsboro company from Harrisburg township, this county. He is a brother of C. W. Dodds of Keosauqua and John F. Dodds of Harrisburg. Two sons, Lute of Utica, and Mete of Pierceville, born to him by his first wife, who was Miss Kate Gaddis who died years ago, survive. He is also survived by his second wife, who was Miss Ellen Perry of this county, and three sons born to them. The mother is a niece of Mrs. J. W. Rowley of Keosauqua. The deceased was a citizen of high character and universally respected by all his acquaintances. He had been in poor health for some time previous to his death and the last two years suffered much from a broken hip, the result of being struck by an automobile. He will be buried Thursday in the Ottawa, Kas. cemetery. Keosauqua Republican May 1917
