It was called that because the newspaper,"The Madison County Eagle" was once housed in the basement.Originally a tavern, this house was constructed in the latter part of the 1700's and was known as the Washington Tavern and Carpenter's Tavern. After 1877, the house became a private residence and still serves that function. William Cave was the Treasurer of Madison County for 25 years. Cave, of Virginia, to be aid-de-camp, with the rank, etc., of first lieutenant in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States of America, for duty with Brig. Gen. J. L. Kemper, to rank from May 16, 1864. I am, sir, respectfully, your obedient servant, JAMES A. SEDDON, Secretary of War. To His Excellency Jefferson Davis, President, etc. The reply: Mr. Sparrow, from the Committee on Military Affairs, to whom was referred (on the 17th instant) the nomination of William J. Cave, of Virginia, to be first lieutenant and aid-de-camp in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States of America, reported, with the recommendation that said nomination be confirmed.
