Description	:	(1) He was a son of George Washington & Polyxena (Northcutt) LORANCE (2) MILITARY SERVICE: 2nd Lieut. ,Company D ,18th Regiment Tennessee Infantry ,Confederate States of America(C.S.A.). NOTE I combined Info. found from his service record with that of his own statements in his application for a Pension to provide the following History of his service. He enlisted at age of 25 years as a Private on 23 MAY 1861 at Murfreesboro,Rutherford Co.,TN. by Colonel Joseph B. PALMER for 1 year and was placed in Captain H. J. St.JOHN's Company D [aka St.JOHN's Guards],assembled at Camp Trousdale,Sumner Co.,TN. with other Companies and was... He enlisted at age of 25 years as a Private on 23 MAY 1861 at Murfreesboro,Rutherford Co.,TN. by Colonel Joseph B. PALMER for 1 year and was placed in Captain H. J. St.JOHN's Company D [aka St.JOHN's Guards],assembled at Camp Trousdale,Sumner Co.,TN. with other Companies and was Organized on 11 JUNE 1861 and Transferred to Confederate Service on 7 AUG. 1861 as the 18th Regiment TN. Infantry Volunteers. He was sent to the Hospital in Nashville,TN. sometime prior to 31 DEC. 1861. While in the "Battle of Fort Donelson",Stewart Co.,TN.(11-16 FEB.1862)he was exposed to the most severly cold weather and contracted Rheumatism and was captured by the enemy there on 16 FEB.1862. He was a Prisoner at Camp Butler in Springfield,Illinois prior to 8 SEP.1862 where he was treated for his illness by a Surgeon named Dr. HEARD. He was sent on 23 SEP.1862 to Vicksburg,Mississippi to be exchanged. In the meantime he was appointed(26 SEP.1862) and commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on 10 OCT.1862 and was exchanged at Aikens Landing on 10 NOV.1862. In the "Battle of Murfreesboro",Rutherford Co.,TN.(31 DEC.'62-2 JAN.'63)while his fellow troops were retreating,he went to his fathers house in Cannon Co.,TN. and was back with his Company prior to MARCH 1863. He was later in Colonel John C. BROWN's Brigade by 10 JUNE 1863,but he found the time to visit his father by 1 JULY 1863 when on that same date a man poseing as him signed an Oath of Allegeance(he swore to his death that he never was Discharged nor took an Oath of Allegiance). While in the "Battle of Chickamauga",Catoosa & Walker Counties,GA.(18-20 SEP.1862)he was in a Hospital at Ringgold and wasen't able to reach his command before they fell back and he was captured. He came back to TN. with General HOOD in his raid and was placed on Paroll on account of his bad health and he had to report in person at McMinnville,Warren Co.,TN. and he remained on Paroll untill the close of the War. After returning home from the War,he was treated by a Dr. R. F. TATUM for 2 or more years. He was married on 31 DEC. 1868 in Cannon Co.,TN. by J. M. SMITH,J.P. to Rebecca Jane WINNETT and had five children. He repaired old Clocks,but Farming was his main occupation and he bacame unable to do any work of value c1883. He filed for a Pension on 24 MARCH 1903 and was accepted. His eyesight became affected c1910 and he became totally blind in DEC.1912.
