The Jefferson Herald; Thursday, July 8th, 2004 ______________________________________________ Lila Mae Oakes was born at Greene County Hospital. She was a daughter of Lyle Charles Oakes and Cora Amantha (Parker) Oakes. They lived northeast of Churdan, and she attended country school there until in third grade. Then they moved into Jefferson, and she graduated from Jefferson High School in May 1956. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Fall and recieved a two year Teachers Certificate in August 1958. She married James Eugene Lawton on August 16, 1956. They lived near Paton on a farm, and Lila taught at Paton Consolidated School. In 1960 they moved to a farm near Grand Junction, Iowa where they lived until 1969. Her husband returned to college to pursue a degree in Veterinary Medicine. In August Lila graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor of Science and Education. That summer they also moved to Slater, Iowa. She took a job teaching second grade at Sheldahl, Iowa in the North Polk School system where she taught until spring 1975 when Jim graduated from college. They moved to Boxholm, Iowa where they bought a practice and a home. She retired from teaching and became Office Manager in the Veterinary practice. They still lived there at the time of her death. Lila had a deep conviction to care for children and youg adults. She raised two daughters, took in two nephews in high school and then four local high school people who needed a home and structure in their lives. They all thought of her as MOM. In 1984 the veterinary practice had dwindled to where Jim went on the road with Allied Van Lines. In 1985 when the last of the foster kids left home, she went on the road also. She got her Commercial Drivers License in 1986 and became a full partner in the buisness with Jim. Lila drove with Jim for most of the next fifteen years with time out here and there to help out a family member, do church things and genealogy. Now I would like to brag about her a bit. Lila could learn to do anything exceptionally well as she did in the veterinary practice and being a van foreman for Allied Van Lines, raising our two daughters and caring for less fortunate people.
