Born in Laurens County in April 28, 1923, she was the daughter of the late James “J.M.” and Lydie Coates Smith and the sister of the late Virginia Smith Whelchel McLoud. Formerly of 210 Grace Street in Gaffney, she resided in Greenville for the last 5 years at Cascades Verdae Retirement Community and The Cottages at Brushy Creek. Polly was a member of Buford Street United Methodist Church for most of her life, where she belonged to the Raymond Lark Class, the Sara Hansen Hartzog Circle, bible study groups and the United Methodist Women. She graduated from Gaffney High School and was a homemaker. A giving heart led her to spending time with shut ins, volunteering at Christmas with the Salvation Army, leading the Girl Scouts and various mission programs. Polly enjoyed traveling with family and friends, her coffee and lemonade, and her bridge clubs. Polly is survived by two daughters, Terri Sarratt, of Atlanta, Ga., and Barbara Holmes ( Mike ) of Piedmont, S.C.; a son, Jim Sarratt (Linda) of Taylors, S.C.; five grandchildren, Phoebe Lamme Floyd (Nathan ) of St. Mary’s, Ga., Samantha Sarratt Adair (Will ) of Spartanburg,S.C., David Holmes (Cassy), of Asheville, N.C., Stuart Sarratt (Elizabeth) of Greenville, S.C., and Caroline Holmes Sentell (Andrew) of Piedmont, S.C. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren, Walker, Nya, Henry, Anne Caroline, Jack, Elizabeth, Charlie and Kai, and many nieces and nephews as well as her caregiver and best friend for 5 years, Kiwana Sweeney. A celebration of her life will be held at Buford Street United Methodist Church at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 25, 2016. Family and friends are invited to join the family at the Family Life Center at 11:30 for a reception. Memorials may be made to: Buford Street United Methodist Church, 120 East Buford Street, Gaffney, S.C. 29340.
