In March 1896 her mother died leaving a family of seven children, Lillian being the youngest. During the following November she was received into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. During the following November she was received into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. On Jan 2nd 1903 she was taken with what seemed to be appendicitis. Acting on the recommendation of the family physician, she was taken to the Hahnemann hospital of Chicago for treatment. After several weeks of delay, for several reasons, one of which was the death of Mrs. Smith’s father, she was operated on for appendicitis. A very serious complication of conditions was found to exist so that for several days her life was despaired of, these conditions however, finally yielded to treatment so that it seemed the patient would certainly get well, when another complication made its appearance which proved to be that most dreaded of diseases, scarlet fever, against this, the frail form of the brave and patient little sufferer was unable to stand. At 5 o’clock Sabbath morning, Feb. 22, she passed away. Hers was a most lovable disposition the light and life of the home. Being unusually attractive in both, person and mind, no one could know her but to love her. The foster parents have the deepest sympathy of their large circle of friends in this their sore affliction, and all appreciate the heroic efforts they have put forth, to save the life of the one, whom, Providence had placed under their care.
