Read More	Durango Herald - (Jan/1/2009) Former Durango resident Linda Lillian Akins died of heart failure at her Aurora home on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008. She was 88. Mrs. Akins was born to Peter and Sarah Becker in Sioux Falls, S.D., on May 24, 1920. She graduated from Marion High School as the salutatorian of her class in 1938. After high school, she attended architecture school. During World War II, Mrs. Akins worked on the military base in Sioux Falls. While there, she met Woody Akins, who was serving in the Air Force. The couple married on Jan. 4, 1945, in Sioux Falls. In 1946, they settled in Durango and started Reliable Roofing Co., which did roofing and insulation. Her family said Mrs. Akins was a devoted wife and homemaker who was also involved in the community, schools and, most notably, the church. Mrs. Akins was a Sunday school and women's Bible studies teacher at First Baptist Church of Durango and Calvary Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Christian Women's Club. In 1972, Mr. and Mrs. Akins were instrumental in starting the Chapel of Life Church, now known as Cornerstone Church. After retiring in 1979, the Akinses were full-time volunteers for Wycliffe Bible Translators at its international headquarters in Huntington Beach, Calif. They moved to Port Angeles, Wash., in 1983. "Linda was passionate and dedicated to teaching women's Bible studies," her family wrote. "Through the years, she led many community and church-based studies, which were attended by hundreds of women." The Akinses were also members of Gideons International, an organization that distributes Bibles. "Linda often took care of needy, hurting people," her family wrote. "She had an open home and even gave the homeless a place to stay. She was also a naturally gifted counselor." Mrs. Akins enjoyed politics, history, archaeology and a number of other interests. She also enjoyed giving to the needy in other countries. She moved to Aurora in 2008 to be near her daughters. Mrs. Akins was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Woody Akins; infant son Daniel Akins; and first grandchild, Donny Anderson. She is survived by her sons Russell Akins and Mark Akins, both of Durango, Stan Akins of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Peter Akins of West Palm Beach, Fla.; daughters Carol Johnson of Littleton, Sondra Joy of Bailey and Connie Akins of Aurora; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Hood Mortuary. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Durango.
