He died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at his residence. The son of Fred and Louise (Friedman) Spieker was born Sept. 17, 1921, at Petersburg. He grew up on his parents farm and attended St. John School. He graduated from St. John High School in Petersburg in 1939. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and was trained as a toxic gas handler at Barksdale Field, La. He served with the 758th Chemical Depot Company as a technical sergeant in the European theater. He was discharged in 1946. He married Laura Pelster on Feb. 3, 1947, at St. Boniface Church. The couple farmed in the Petersburg area for two years before moving to a farm near Elgin. Mr. Spieker was a member of St. Boniface Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of American Legion Post 229 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5816. Survivors include one son and spouse, Vincent and Patricia of Elgin; five daughters and spouses, Helen and Marvin Borer of Omaha, Margaret Scannell of Tempe, Ariz., Jane Cline of Omaha, Julie and Larry Borer of Elgin, and Lori and Randy Tomplin of Fullerton; five brothers, Cletus of Laverne, Minn., Robert of Neligh, LeRoy of Fremont, Lawrence and Fred, both of Petersburg; four sisters, Rosamond Klein and Florence Luettel, both of Petersburg, Agatha Richart of Neligh, and Malinda Buelt of Elgin; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and one sister.
