Dunlap was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, February 2, 1846. He died March 17, 1923, at his home in Wichita, aged 77 years, one month and 15 days. He was laid to rest in the Dunlap cemetery, located on the quarter section of land which he prempted in 1871, and on which he made his home from that time until a few years ago, being a pioneer resident of Butler county for 52 years. He was a member of Company K, 34th Iowa, Volunteer Infantry, enlisting from his home at that time in Chariton, Iowa, and serving until the close of the Civil War. He was at the time of his death a member of Garfield Post No. 40, Grand Army of the Republic at Wichita. he had been for the past 18 years a member of the National Association of Civil War Musicians. He was converted and baptised into the Baptist church at Chariton, Iowa, when a young man, and although not an active member of any church body for some years past, he never lost faith in the Fatherhood of God, nor in Christ as his personal Savior. He was married March 13, 1883, to Sarah Maple-Stoddard of Benton, Kansas, who survives him. To this union three children were born; Isaac A., of Wichita; Laban C., of Rose Hill; and Mrs. Dorothy Houghton of Wichita, all of whom were at his beside when the end came. "As sinks the setting sun to rise again another dawn; So fell asleep our father, to wake in the land of endless day." This marks the passing of a true soldier, a life spent in serving the principles of Right, Justice, and Truth, an honest, upright man, respected by all, and best loved and trusted by those who knew him best.
