CONKLIN died at his home in Newell, Iowa, Monday, July 30, 1917, aged 73 years. 10 months and 12 days. Mr. Conklin has been in failing health for a number of years, suffering from diabetes. While he was suffering from an incurable disease and was far from being well he was able to be around the most of the time, attending to the few tasks he liked to do at home, working in his garden and going up town every day to get his mail and mingle with old friends. On March 20th he had a light stroke of paralysis which partially disabled him and which confined him to his home. On June 14th he suffered a second stroke. From that time he was confined to his bed and gradually weakened until death came to his relief. During his long and painful illness he had the benefit of the best medical skill that could be procured and the loving ministrations of his devoted wife and daughter Mrs. W. D. Rust, Jr., and her husband. So far as it could be done throughout his long illness he was comfortable and kept from pain. At the last when the flame of life had burned low he passed away quietly in his sleep. His life's work was done and well done. His earthly career was finished. His last illness had drawn to its close. Nature closed his eyes with the healing balm of the last long sieep and he passed away like "one who wraps t h e drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams. Lionel Conklin was born Sept. 18, 1843, near Prescott, Ontario, Canada. He was the youngest of a family of five children who all preceded him to the great beyond. He came to Illinois in 1861 and later went to Parkersburg, Iowa, where he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Ann McClaughrey Dec. 9, 1873. To this union were born five children, two of whom died in childhood. In 1879 Mr. Conklin moved with his family from Parkersburg to a farm two miles and a half northwest of Newell which Mr. Conklin stiil owned at the time of his death and where they resided until about seven years ago when they moved into the residence property Mr. Conklin had purchased in Newell and where the death angel came to him and called him from the earthly life to the mystery t h a t lies beyond the boundary of time and space. This is t h e life history, briefly told of an honored citizen of Newell whom the writer has known and esteemed for a good many years. There was nothing of special note or prominence in his life. He lived the quiet life of a well to do farmer and when he moved to town there was nothing to mar the peace and serenity of his existence from day to day. He was devoted to his home and to his family. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was one who loved his home and was always happiest at his own fireside. The writer pays him a tribute of esteem that had grown and strengthened through an association of many years. His memory will always be cherished by the loved ones he has left behind. May he rest in peace until the great ingathering day of the Lord shall be ushered in. Mr. Conklin leaves to mourn his loss his devoted wife and three children, Mrs. Viola J. Haines and Mrs.Ruby A. Rust of Newell, and David L. Conklin of Vivian, S. Dak., and also three grandsons, one of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Haines and two of Mr and Mrs. David Conklin of Vivian, S. Dak.
