Description	:	Lionel J. Froseth, 84, of Sioux Falls, SD and formerly of Ponca, NE, died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on Wednesday, December 27, 2017. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Saturday, December 30 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation with family present will be on Friday, December 29 from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, with a Liturgical Wake Service at 6:30 PM, at Holy Spirit Church. Froseth, 84, of Sioux Falls, SD and formerly of Ponca, NE, died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on Wednesday, December 27, 2017. Lionel was born on September 3, 1933 to Lester and Alma (DeReu) Froseth in Garretson, SD. He graduated from Garretson High School in 1951. Lionel was united in marriage with Patricia Mitchell on April 18, 1953 in Garretson, SD. He entered the US Army in 1954 during the Korean War and was stationed at Anchorage, AK. Lionel was honorably discharged in 1956 then served in the SD Army National Guard until 1959. After the military, Lionel received his Bachelors of Science Degree from Southern State Teachers College in 1959, a Masters Degree from the University of South Dakota in 1965 and a Specialist Degree from USD in 1972. Lionel taught math at Ponca, NE and Heelan High School in Sioux City, IA. He was Admiral of the Nebraska Navy in 1963, former Big Stick of SD Hickory Stick in 1973, and Principal and Superintendent of Schools in Harrisburg SD from 1963 to 1975. He then moved to Ponca, Nebraska and was Superintendent of Schools for 18 years, retiring in 1993. Lionel and Pat moved to Sioux Falls in 2002. Pat died on March 8, 2008. Lionel was a member of Holy Spirt Catholic Church, the Elks Club, the SD Beadle Club, a life member of the American Legion, and was the Dixon County Superintendent of Schools. He was a charter member and held many positions on the Board of Directors of Ponca Community Educational Foundation. Lionel enjoyed fishing, golfing and being a volunteer driver for Workers on Wheels. Grateful for having shared his life are his five children, Kathy Hoekstra and her husband, Chuck, Sioux Falls, SD, Doug Froseth and his wife, Genie, Ramsey, MN, Becky Brennan and her husband, Bill, Sioux Falls, SD, Liz Swenson and her husband, Doug, Woonsocket, SD, Lynell Martin and her husband, Randy, Burke, SD; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Froseth, Brandon, SD, Barb Morrison and her husband, Bob, Freemont CA; two brothers-in-law, Jim Mitchell and his wife, Janice, Sioux Falls, SD, Ron Mitchell and his wife, Roxie, Faribault MN; and many other relatives and friends. Lionel was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; his parents; a brother, Arden Froseth; a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Jim Finch; and an infant sister.
