Shortly after 2 o’clock this afternoon, Lizzie Decker, daughter of James Decker, living with her uncle George Decker on Sixth street, corner of Sycamore, was fearfully, if not fatally, burned by the explosion of a can of coal oil, which she was using in kindling a fire. Assistance was at hand almost as soon as the explosion was heard, and blankets and hose were used to extinguish the burning clothes of the unfortunate girl. It is thought she did not inhale the heat from the flames of her burning dress, although her face and hands are badly burned, as well as her lower limbs. Dr. Stansbury was immediately called in and all that was possible was done to alleviate her sufferings. Moaning in her agony, the unfortunate young girl exclaimed: “Oh I shall died! I cannot live!” The room where the accident occurred presented the scene of a conflagration, although the fire was checked before doing much damage to the room. The girl is about 15 years of age, in strong and robust health, and it is hoped that her severe burns may not prove fatal. 12-year-old Lizzie B. Decker was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on April 11, 1887. The Weekly Butte Record (Chico, Calif.), Saturday, April 16, 1887, pg 1 col 6: Passed Away. Miss Lizzie Decker, the young girl so severely burned some days ago by the explosion of a coal oil can, died at an early hour yesterday morning. The funeral took place from the M.E. Church, South, this afternoon at 3 o’clock.
