He was born April 16, 1922, in Henry County, the son of John and Clara (Wirth) Groll. In 1948, he married Alvera Wirth, who survives. He was a retired farmer in Richland and Highland townships, a carpenter and a substitute U.S. mail carrier. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Defiance VFW Post 3360 and St. Stephen Lutheran Church, rural Defiance, where he held various offices. Also surviving are a son, Randall (Diana), Holgate; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Darrel and John; three sisters, Goldie Myles, Mattie Smith and Betty Botjer; and a half sister, Hilda Hoover. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Stephen Lutheran Church, rural Defiance, with Rev. William Stottlemyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites accorded by Defiance VFW Post 3360. Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home, Defiance, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
