Description	:	MARION, S.D. -- Lloyd Charles Kauffman, 88, died Wednesday (July 10, 2002). He was born June 4, 1914, to Charles J. and Fanie (Schrag) Kauffman on a farm 12 miles southwest of Marion, S.D. He married Myrtle Hanson June 18, 1939. She preceded him in death in 1967. He married Esther (Nickel) Deckert two years later. She preceded him in death in 1996. He graduated from Freeman High School and attended Freeman College. Read More	MARION, S.D. -- Lloyd Charles Kauffman, 88, died Wednesday (July 10, 2002). He was born June 4, 1914, to Charles J. and Fanie (Schrag) Kauffman on a farm 12 miles southwest of Marion, S.D. He married Myrtle Hanson June 18, 1939. She preceded him in death in 1967. He married Esther (Nickel) Deckert two years later. She preceded him in death in 1996. He graduated from Freeman High School and attended Freeman College. He completed a two-year normal course at Freeman College and taught in rural schools for five years. In 1940 his parents moved the family museum to Bethel College in North Newton and became curators of the Kauffman Museum, leaving the family farm for him to operate. He farmed for 25 years while assisting his father's work at Kauffman Museum. In his spare time he studied the Bible and other literature. For many years he taught Sunday school class in church. He was also an avid motorcyclist. In 1970 he and his wife, Esther, were called to serve at Mennonite Christian Hospital in Taiwan where he was director of the maintenance staff. After 10 years of service they returned to the United States and settled in Marion to become active in the Bethesda Mennonite Church. In the years that followed he continued his missionary work as a lay missionary. Survivors include: three sons, Charles Kauffman of Marshall, Minn., Garth Kauffman of Douglas, Wyo., and James Kauffman of Casper, Wyo.; two stepsons, Geoffrey Deckert of Newton and Ross Deckert of Denver; a stepdaughter, Sheila Weiss of Waukee, Iowa; a brother, Ralph; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; three-great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Funeral service was Saturday at Bethesda Mennonite Church. Pastor James Koller officiated. Burial was in Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery.
