Friends and family are mourning the death of Lloyd C Engel, who passed away at his Escalon home on Sunday, Aug 7 at the age of 92. Born in Lodi on April 15, 1913, he had called Escalon his home for 60 years and for many, Engel was synonymous with the community. He and his wife, the late Grace Engel, were the founders of the Escalon Learn to Swim Program and he served as co-director of the venture for more than 50 years. He was a coach, phys ed teacher and athletic director at Escalon High School for 30 years and the football stadium is named in his honor, the Cougars playing their home games on Engel Field. "He was the epitome of a class act," said Escalon Unified School District Superintendent Bob Wallace. "I've been here 25 years so I've learned everything about Lloyd from everybody else. You can't imagine the impact he had had. "People around here, they referred to him as 'coach' but he was more than just a coach." for many, he was a mentor, a man who challenged them to do their best...and then pushed them a little bit more. "He was a man with integrity and he made you think about and do things you didn't think you could do," agreed John Largent. "He instilled a lot of self-esteem in people and he was a very fair individual." A member of the school board, Largent had Engel as a football coach during his high school playing days for the Cougars. "I had him for football but at one time, he coached pretty much everything," Largent said. "I've known the family for over 50 years and Lloyd was a very caring, family oriented and community oriented man." Grace Engel, his wife, passed away in 1995 and he lost a daughter, Carol Prater, in 1996. His son, Wayne Engel, survives him and devoted the last few years to taking care of his dad, allowing Engel to live at home and maintain a sense of dignity and independence. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. "Even when he was in the wheelchair, Wayne would bring him to games," noted Largent. Lloyd Engel was a familiar presence at sports competitions for Escalon High, often taking the time to stop by and visit current athletic director and varsity football coach Mark Loureiro to talk strategy, football and life in general. "He was a figure you looked up to all your life in this town," admitted Loureiro. "He was involved in everything to make things better for everyone. Every decision he made, he took everyone's feelings into consideration." The younger Loureiro said he can trace the start of the powerhouse Escalon athletic programs to Engel's direction and dedication to his athletes. His father Bob Loureiro, who played football for Engel and then later coached with him, agreed. "He had a lot to do in developing me to go on to college," said the elder Loureiro. "He helped me get the job (at Escalon) and I coached with him for a number of years before he retired. "He was very supportive, behind you 100 percent and he loved to win." Involved in the community as well, Engel was an almond farmer, a lifetime member of Kiwanis and was known as the "dean of high school football coaches" throughout the Valley, coaching in parts of three decades. "He was a major influence in my life," said Bob Loureiro. School board member and assistant varsity football coach Al Caton said his long association with Engel helped shape his life as well. "He's probably the main reason I coach," Caton said. "He was just a guy that was a very respected person. He gave his players and the people he associated with a lot of respect. And he got it back." From running the Red Cross swim program with his wife to treating everyone fairly and with respect, Caton said Engel raised everyone around him to his level. "I don't think they're going to find anyone better," he said. "Growing up as a kid in Escalon, he was the man." Though in failing health the past few years, Caton said it was always a joy to see Engel at games, still supporting the teams. "My class gets together and we still talk about him," Caton admitted. "We thought that he was hard-nosed but as you grow older, you understand. He's meant an awful lot to this community." Engel was the last surviving of five children, with siblings Al Engel of Clements and Viola Young, Ethel Baumbach and Hanna Henderson, all of Lodi, preceding him in death. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, Aug 12 at 11am at Escalon Presbyterian Church, where Engel was an Elder. There will be no visitation and burial will be private. "He didn't put on airs for anybody. He was just Lloyd," added Wallace. "He had his values, they were set and he never wavered. "It's a tremendous loss for the community."
