While the news of his death had been momentarily expected for several hours, the fact of his passing seemed to enshroud the community with gloom. Lloyd was visiting with relatives in Lincoln when he was taken sick on March 26. He came home as soon as possible and the physician who was called to attend him, pronounced his ailment appendicitis. He grew worse and Sunday morning, April 8, underwent an operation which revealed a condition apparently hopeless. Later in the week a specialist was called from Omaha, only to inform the family that everything that medical science could do, had been done and that it was only a question of hours. Bravely Lloyd fought for life against overwhelming odds and just as bravely he faced death. When informed Friday that there was no hope, he called for a tablet, wrote a few letters to his folks, to his Sunday school class and to the high school. He bade farewell to his intimate friends late Friday afternoon, spoke words of comfort to his father and mother and the other near relatives and a few minutes later he had passed away. Lloyd Dewey Phillips was born at the old homestead near Petersburg, Nebraska, May 23, 1898. With his parents he moved to Albion in the year 1904, and since that time has been at home. He was educated in the public schools of Albion, being at the time of his death, a member of the junior class of the high school. As a high school student he stood high in the estimation of his teachers. He was diligent in his studies and was ambitious to attain good marks. His high school associates recognized in Lloyd, one who was determined to lead a clean life, and he was respected for his stand. Aside from his interest in school work, he took a special enjoyment in the athletic affairs of the school. The past season he was a member of the first basketball team and proved one of the most faithful and efficient players. He was also a member of the high school orchestra. At the age of ten years, he accepted the Christian faith and became a member of the Methodist church. At the time of his death he was a member of the choir, a teacher in the Sunday school and a member of the Epworth League. His interest in his church work was just as pronounced as his interest in school and before his death he called in one of his friends and secured from her a promise that she would take up his Sunday school class. Lloyd left to mourn his death his father, his mother, one sister, two brothers and other near relatives. Besides these, a host of friends have been saddened, and the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family. The funeral was held from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The number who assembled to pay their last respects to the departed one was so great that many were not able to gain admittance. The floral offerings were beautiful and profuse. The sermon was preached by Dr. Main and the choir rendered two selections. Miss Bobbitt, of Lincoln, a cousin of Lloyd’s sang “A Perfect Day”. The members of the high school boys’ basketball team acted as pall bearers, the members of the girls’ team acting in an honorary capacity. The junior class of the high school, the two Sunday school classes of which Lloyd had been teacher, the high school faculty, the board of education, his old Sunday school class, and members of the M. W. A. lodge attended the service in a body. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.
