Visitation will be Sunday, August 2, 2020 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Geilenfeld-Buehner Funeral home in Oelwein with a Masonic Service at 7:00 pm led by Hebron Lodge #374 of Oelwein. Those in attendance are asked to wear a mask. Lloyd Edward Hultman was born on September 14, 1932 in Jefferson Township near Oelwein, IA to John and Alma (Loeb) Hultman. Lloyd grew up in the Oelwein and Westgate communities moving with his family to the Hultman Farm in 1936. He was baptized in 1947and confirmed in May 1947 from St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Westgate. His early education took place in Hazelton, Oelwein, and the rural school #6 in Westgate up through the 7th grade; followed by 8th grade at St Peter's Lutheran Parochial School in Westgate. Lloyd attended high school in Maynard and in 1951he graduated from Maynard High School and he received his B.A.in Education (Social Studies and History) in 1955 from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. After meeting in 1952 at the Coliseum in Oelwein, many dances and a long engagement later, on June 19, 1955 Lloyd married Hazel Gipper of Fairbank. To which this union came 4 children: Stephanie Jean, Cheryl, Kraig and Karman. On December 5, 1955 Lloyd was drafted into the Navy. He attended Basic Training at U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, IL (Company 732). In February 1956 was transferred to the USS Lexington CVA 16 where he traveled the Pacific for nine months. He was then reassigned to Subic Bay in the Philippines and later to Treasure Island, San Francisco. He was discharged December 6, 1957. During his military career he was a Disbursing Clerk (finance) Petty Officer 3rd Class. In 2017, Lloyd was selected to attend the 19th Waterloo Honor Fight and in 2019 he received the Quit of Valor from the Westgate American Legion Post 92. After discharge from the Navy, Lloyd worked in Oelwein for one year with Iowa Finance and then returned to farming in 1958, moving to the family farm where he and Hazel resided into retirement. Retiring from dairy farming in 1985, Lloyd continued cash crop farming through 2004. During that time, Lloyd was a member of the Fremont Township ASCS for 25 years and worked as a sexton for the Murphy United Methodist Church Cemetery in Fayette County for several years. Being a 50-yearMaster Mason and Shriner were a very important part of his life. In 1967Lloyd joined the Masonic Fraternity at Sunnyside Lodge #510in Maynard, IA. He was also attended the Lookout Lodge #395 in Sumner and later Hebron Lodge #374 in Oelwein. Holding the position of Worshipful Master at each of these lodges. In 1968, joined the El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids and was with the Oelwein Tin Lizzies for 35 years. Later he joined the North East Iowa Shrine Motor Clowns of which he was a member at the time of his death. Lloyd enjoyed traveling around Northeast Iowa participating in small town parades, raising money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Lloyd also played fast-pitch softball for the Westgate Tigers, who finished 2nd in the North District Softball Tournament, qualifying for the State Tournament in 1959. He loved to play golf and on September 21, 2012 Lloyd recorded a hole-in-one on the par 3 13th hole at Big Rock Country Club where he was a Charter Member and a member for over 50 years. His other interests included his family and working with stained glass, donating many pieces to charity. Lloyd is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hazel of Westgate: four children: Stephanie Jean Hultman of Waterloo, Cheryl (Steve) Reynolds of Sumner, Kraig (Barbara) Hultman of Des Moines and Karman (Larry) Nilges of Sumner. Five grandchildren; Megan Bloomquist of Mitchellville, Kayla (Wayne) Burch, Jr. of Des Moines, Jacob Reynolds of Coralville, Matthew Reynolds (Sydney Roth) of Cedar Falls and Kelsey (Tyler Schroeder) Nilges of Waterloo. Four great-grandchildren: Makinley and Haizley Bloomquist of Mitchellville and Mason and Madison Burch of Des Moines. Two brothers: Charles (Irene) of Lexington, KY and Howard (Bea) of Dayton, OH; one sister: Mary Fink of Aplington; sisters-in-law: Pat Hultman of Keota, and Edith Hultman of Prairie Village, KS; brother-in-law: Ivan (Marcella) Gipper of Waterloo and sister-in-law Grace Mathews of Charter Oak along with many nieces and nephews. Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: James Hultman, Donald Hultman, and William Hultman; two sisters: Kathlyn (Burton and Eldo) Moeller and France (Leslie) Brudvig; brothers-in-law: Albert (Daisy) Gipper, Leonard (Emma) Gipper, Lloyd (Barb) Gipper, Ralph (Edna) Gipper and sister-in law: Emma (William) Pettit.
