Jack was born Jan. 13, 1929, in Howard, S.D., to the proud parents of Lloyd and Mabel Port. He grew up in the Akron, Iowa, area and graduated from Akron High School in 1946. Upon graduation, he worked at the Akron Creamery until leaving to proudly serve his country in the Korean War in 1951. He was united in marriage to Kathleen "Kay" Sargent of Akron on July 5, 1951. Following a distinguished career in the United States Army, the couple returned to their hometown of Akron in 1954. He enrolled in the Business College of the University of South Dakota and graduated in 1958 with a bachelor of science degree in accounting. Following graduation, the couple found their way to Detroit, Mich., where he was employed as a federal examiner for the National Credit Union Administration. Upon conclusion of his duties as a federal examiner, he was appointed, in 1960, as president and chief executive officer of the Muskegon Co-op Federal Credit Union in Muskegon, Mich. During his tenure, he also served on the board of directors of the National Federal Credit Union Association from 1965 to 1978. He later was the president and chief executive officer of the Muskegon Governmental Employees Federal Credit Union in 1979, from where he retired in 1994. Upon his retirement in 1994, the couple relocated to Le Mars. He was a member of Adaville United Methodist Church, American Legion Wasmer Post 241, and the Korean War Last Man's Club. For many years, he was a member of the Fraternal Order of Vikings, Linne Lodge 57 in Muskegon, Mich. During his retirement, he kept himself busy with gardening, allowing himself to be tormented by his beloved wife, exasperated by his two sons and praying that his grandchildren would turn out somewhat normal. The latter of which he succeeded. Survivors include his wonderful wife of 52 years, Kathleen of Le Mars; two sons and their wives, David and Karen of Las Vegas, Nev., and Scott and Pam of Rockford, Mich.; two sisters and their husbands, Bonnie and Donald Rice of Sioux City, and Beulah and Bill Gant of Hawarden; a brother-in-law, Bruce Smith of Lake Irene, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Jacob and Haley, Megan and Beau. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Mabel Port; and a sister, Evelyn Smith. Pallbearers will be Robert Ahlers, Lawrence Baer, Merlin Brown, Dan Carpenter, Darrell Peters and Richard Philips. Please come to celebrate the crossing of our friend into a new beginning.
