"Dutch" Votaw, 83, of 1376 S. Lincoln Ave. died at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Salem Community Hospital following a long illness. He was born Nov. 5, 1900, in Guilford, son of the late Morris and Mary Catherine Kuhl Votaw. He retired in 1962 as manager for the Ashland Oil Co. after 44 years with the company. He had also worked for McCullouch Department Stores for several years. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Salem, United Commercial Travelers and the Harris Sunday School class of the church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Kirchgessner, whom he married Nov. 23, 1923. She died Jan. 25, 1964. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Joe (Mary Mae) Celin, of Damascus; two granddaughters, Mrs. Susan Kleinline, of Columbus and Mrs. Nancy Sherman, of Pittsburgh; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence, and a sister, Edna Gruber. Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Stark Memorial with Dr. Arnett Winn of the church officiating. Burial will be at Woodsdale Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Stark Memorial. The family's two favorite charities are YWCA and the Christian Church Memorial Fund. NOTE: There is one mistake in this obituary. They were actually married on Nov. 21, 1923 and not on the 23rd.
