Burkey, a former Seward resident, died on the emergency table in Seward Memorial Hospital after the Harley Davison 74 cycle he was riding struck a curb, throwing him 95 feet before he hit the ground. Burkey was heading west around the curve on Highway 34 at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the machine and struck the curb on the north side of the street 32 feet before the intersection. The bike remained upright until it had crossed Columbia and hit the curb on the other side. It then threw Burkey off and began to cartwheel, hitting a city signpost and striking the ground three separate times before coming to rest 56 feet west of the curb. Burkey was thrown 95 feet west, where he received the fatal severe head injuries upon impact. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The 835-pound cycle, belonging to Laverne Kramer, a Harley Davison dealer in Lincoln, was totally demolished. It was valued at $1450. Burkey was employed as a mechanic at the Kramer agency at the time of his death. Born November 29, 1942, at Milford, Burkey's address was listed at 2727 No. 33rd, Lincoln, at the time of his death. Survivors include his wife, Kathy, and son, Mark; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lorence Burkey, Seward; a brother, Verlin, Lincoln; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Burkey, Milford, and Mrs. Ralph Stogsdill, Galveston, Tex.; a niece and a nephew. Services for Burkey were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Missionary Church at Milford. The Revs. Kenneth Baker and Raymond Butterfield officiated, and burial was at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Milford.
