He attended a homestead claim drawing on Oct. 1, 1908, at Gregory, S.D. He was lucky winner #1743 and homesteaded on the SW quarter of section 23 in township 96 and range 75 (then McNeely; now Lake Township). In 1910 he was listed in McNeely Township, Tripp County, SD Census, living with a nephew Max M. Dolezal. John was a farmer by occupation and by 1915 census owned his farm, in Lake township. John met Rosie Hrabanek, daughter of Joseph and Anna Kral Hrabanek, who lived just across the road from him, in Lake township. On Oct. 22, 1912, they were united in marriage. They lived in a two room homestead house, which consisted of one room on the main floor and a small attic room on the second floor (this later became their chicken coop). In the 1920 census of South Dakota, they lived in Lake Township in Tripp County, listed living with them is his nephew, William Dolezal. In 1920 John brought lumber from Dallas, S.D., by team and wagon to build a bigger house, in which Edna (Lloyd) Kartak resides, daughter-in-law of Rosie and John. Then John made his two room homestead house into a chicken coop. The oldest son, Stephen, picture on right, was born Dec. 24, 1913 and died Oct.22, 1919 in Tripp County, SD, from the flu that had taken many lives in the area. He is buried in the Colome, Cemetery. Their daughter, Lucy, (Mrs. Raymond Krumpus), resides in the Elder Inn in Winner, SD; son, Lloyd (deceased), wife Edna Holden (resides on the family farm); son Raymond and wife Cecelia Storms, both deceased, lived in the Clearfield, SD area: son Clifford and wife Viola Intorn, both deceased lived south of Winner, SD; Louise (Mrs Lawrence DeMers deceased), from the Colome area resides at the Elder Inn, Winner, SD. The Kartak children attended Grand Valley Country School, in Lake Township. Summer time was spent wadding at Keya Paha River and fishing at Rahn Lake. Ice skating at Rahn Lake was a wintertime favorite. Other entertainment at neighborhood gatherings was the usual card games and Chinese checkers. Elmer Owens started a Farmers Union Jr. Band which held practice at Turtle Butte Hall, sometime around the early 1930's. Some of the band members included; Lucy, Raymond, Lloyd and Clifford Kartak, Pete Marsh, Harold Weidner, Vern Kinzer, Mable Hrabanek Mayes, Irene Hrabanek Weidner, Johnny Adams and Bob Lamborg. The band did some traveling in the back of a truck, all the way to Rapid City and Huron, SD to perform at Farmers Union activities. Lucy recalled eating supper and attending a dance and staying overnight before returning home. The Kartak boys and neighboring boys loved baseball and on Sunday afternoons played on the Rahn Lake Ball Team in the early 1940's. They would compete against neighboring teams such as: Wewela, Paxton, Millboro and Clearfield. Clearfield was a challenging team to play against. Members of the Rahn Lake team were: Clifford, Raymond Kartak, Harold Weidner, Albert Kaiser, Pete Marsh, Art, Teddy and Leonhart Kahler and Glen Hofer. Here is a picture celebrating a win against Wewela in 1942. John served on the township board and Grand Valley school board. He also gave a piece of land on which St. Patrick's Catholic Church (which was also called the Danton Church) was build, and served as trustee to the church for many years. St. Patrick's Catholic Church was the church the family attended until it was dissolved in the 1960's. It was a Mission church and the priest would travel from various towns every Sunday. When the weather got bad, John and Rosie opened their home to the priest to stay until the weather improved. Before this church was built, homesteaders' traveled to the London homestead to go to Mass in a sod building. Lucy Krumpus remembered walking a quarter of a mile to attend church, no matter what the weather. The church was very cold in the winter as it was heated with a pot belly stove. Later years it was quite chilly as people weren't as faithful to come early to start the fire. So they put in an oil burner stove, which helped some but the church was hard to heat with such high ceilings and poorly built. Danton Catholic Church aka St Patrick's Catholic Church, located 10 miles south and 4 miles west of Colome, SD., was built in 1922 on the homestead land, donated by John Kartak. P.H. London was the contractor, and Lin Ballard and Dave Moses were the carpenters with the help of neighbors. Joseph Holden and John Kartak helped to get the church started and built, and later furnished wood for the stove. Mass was said every Sunday the priests came from Dallas, SD and sometimes Paxton, SD. or Clearfield, SD. During the early years, the parish had about 30 families. They came from many miles around; sometimes with horse and buggy or wagon, others walked several miles. There was an active alter society. The ladies met in some of the homes or at the church. They had Sunday ice cream socials, and in the winter they had regular progressive pitch parties. For many years an annual picnic was held in the Kartak grove. The church was closed in 1966. Lloyd Kartak bought the church and moved it to the family homestead, north of his tree grove and used it for a granary, later he remodeled it into a hog house. Two of John and Rosie's sons served their county; Clifford and Lloyd both served in the US Army and were World War II Veterans. Raymond stayed home to help his father on the family farm, during these years. John passed away in 1947 and Rosie in 1974 and are buried in the Colome, Cemetery.
