CORONER IS CALLED The body of Lloyd Wolf, 22, who resided with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Hall, one mile east of Tocsin, was found at 6 o'clock this morning in a ditch at a point about one-fourth mile west of his home. Coroner William Thoma reported that death was due to a fractured skull and neck, probably caused by his being struck by an automobile. Charles Porter, Kirkland township, Adams county, while driving to his work in Fort Wayne, discovered the body. It was lying in tall weeks on the north side of state road 224. Marks on the roadway indicated Wolf had been hurled about 20 feet from where he was walking on the north side of the road. It is thought that the weeds prevented finding the body earlier. CORONER CALLED Following finding of the body, Coroner William Thoma was notified. In making an investigation, he learned that a farmer, James Hunt, who lives on the south side of the road, was perhaps the only person who might be a witness. Hunt reported that about 6:30 Friday evening he was out of doors keeping a lookout for chicken thieves. He saw Wolf walking along the road toward Tocsin. At that instant, he also saw two cars approaching Wolf from opposite directions. Headlights on both cars were burning, he said. As the cars passed the spot where he saw Wolf, Hunt informed the corner that he heard a dull thud, but thought that possibly Wolf had made this noise by jumping onto the running board of the westbound car headed toward Tocsin. He did not see Wolf after the cars had passed. Hunt also said the cars were not traveling at excessive rates of speed. Ray Thompson, another farmer residing farther east of state road 224, reported that about 6:30 a car slowed down in front of his home. He though that some relatives he had been expecting had arrived, but the car did not stop. He said that he heard gears being shifted on the car as it went on east. Theory Advanced. As the accident occurred at almost the instant the two cars were passing, Coroner Thoma said it was possible that the driver of the car striking Wolf did not see him and perhaps did not know that an accident had occurred. This could have been possible by reason of the fact that bright lights might have blinded the driver of the death car. Another theory is that possibly the death car was a truck. Hunt could not tell the coroner, it was said, what kind of cars he saw pass. As Wolf's body was found on the north side of the road, it seems certain that he was struck by the westbound car. If this car was a truck with an extended width body, it might be that the bed extension struck Wolf, and that the driver did not know what had happened. This theory seems to be borne out by the fact that the victim's body did not show bruises, with the exception of one slight bruise on the shoulder. The left side of his skull was crushed and the neck was broken. Victim Looked Back Hall said that when he noticed Wolf, he was walking west on the right side of the road. He evidently saw the car approaching from the east and then heard the one coming from the west. An instant before the cars passed, Hall said Wolf turned his head to look back. At that instant the cars passed. As the left side of Wolf's skull was crushed, it seems possible that the high, wide bed of a truck could easily have been what inflicted that kind of injury. Car Slowed The eastbound car heard to slow up in front of the Thompson farm home, might have been driven by someone who heard the dull thud when Wolf was struck, and decided to investigate, but changed their mind. Wolf was enroute to Tocsin at the time of the accident. His body was taken to Ossian. Surviving besides the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Hall, are his father, Harold O. Wolf, of Adams county, and one brother and one sister. Funeral arrangements had not been made at noon today. Coroner Thoma and Prosecutor George Glass are both investigating the case.
