Smith had died suddenly in Des Moines [February 5, 1939], and it was a shock to his relatives and friends who had seen him only that morning, occupied with his usual daily tasks. He with Mrs. Smith and his mother, Mrs. Mary Smith, drove to Des Moines to pass the day with relatives and upon their return trip were to bring their son Wayne, who had been visiting with his brother Max, home with them. Before leaving his home here Mr. Smith had complained of a slight illness, but regarding it nothing of importance they made the trip. However, he grew worse, and died shortly after arriving at the home of his son in the city. Lloyd Zola Smith, son of James and Mary Smith, was born at Lake City Oct. 6, 1892. His education was obtained from the Lake City schools, and he graduated from the high school course in 1912. October 16, 1916 [sic], he was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Noe, of Lake City. To them were born four children: Max Edward of Des Moines; Lloyd Wayne of Omaha; Robert Glenn and Helen Ruth, at home. Mr. Smith affiliated with the Methodist church while a junior in high school, in the year 1911, and many times gave his support and time to further its interest. He was, for many years, a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. He had been engaged for a number of years in the dairy business, and was an industrious and hard working man, having the respect of all who knew him. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Smith; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Mabee of Des Moines and Mrs. Hilda Haselton of Glidden. There are also three half-sisters, Mrs. Ilee Gabriel of Des Moines and Mrs. Rada Ripley and Veva Wright of Lake City. Mr. Smith's father preceded him in death in October, 1931. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church, with the Rev. F. F. Robinson officiating. Burial was in Cottonwood cemetery.
