Edgewood Journal Thursday 10 Nov 1921 Farm Helper Hangs Self Locke Battin, aged 22 years, committed suicide last Saturday morning at the farm home of Bryan Sherman, where he had been employed for the past year and a half. Mr. Battin ate his breakfast and went to the barn to get his team ready for work. After a considerable time Mr. Sherman noticed that he had not left the yard and went in search for him. His lifeless form was found hanging in the hay shute. Dr. Gray of Edgewood was summoned and he notified the county coroner. An inquest was held, which resulted in the verdict that Mr. Battin had taken his own life. He left nothing that anyone could find that would give any information as to the cause for committing the deed. Obituary (same newspaper) Locke Sheldon Battin was born in Sullivan county, Pennsylvania, June 6th,1899 and died at Edgewood, Iowa, November 5th, 1921, at the age of 22 years, 4 months and 29 days. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin P. Battin. His father, five sisters and six brothers survive him; his mother and one brother preceeded him in death. He came from his native state of Pennsylvania in 1913 and since that time has resided in this section of the state. For the past year he had been employed on the Sherman farm. Mr. Battin was a loyal worker, steady in his work, was a young man of good habits and highly esteemed by all who knew him. His death comes as a great shock to his relatives, who have the sympathy of the entire community. Funeral services were held from the Methodist chuch Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Artman and the remains were laid to rest in the Edgewood cemetery.
