Although in her 88th year, Mrs. Thornthwaite had been enjoying good health and was able to carry out her household duties. On Saturday afternoon she was calling on her sister, Mrs. Amy Hickman when she took a bad turn and passed away at about 1 a.m. Sunday morning. Mrs. Thornthwaite was formerly Miss Lois Thompson and was born in Oxford on November 18th, 1860, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Thompson, one of the pioneer families of this town. She lived all her long life in this community where she was loved and respected by all. Since her youth, she was a very faithful member of Oxford Baptist Church. Few Sundays found her absent from her place of worship and she was always very active in the work of her church. Her husband, the late Joseph Thornthwaite, predeceased her on December 20, 1911, and one son, Allan was killed in action during the First World War. Sorrowing members of the family surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Harriett Webb, also one sister, Mrs. Amy Hickman, age 92 years, who is the last member of the Thompson family. Other survivors are one grandson, J. Hubert Webb, stationed at Greenwood with the R.C.A.F., two granddaughters, Irene (Mrs. Thomas B. MacDormand) Toronto, and Lois (Mrs. Norman Stafford) of New York, also five great grandchildren. The funeral service was held on Tuesday afternoon from the Oxford Baptist Church following a brief service at the home. The church was well filled as friends from near and far gathered to pay their last respects. Rev. M.S. Richardson, pastor, conducted the service and paid a touching tribute to the fine Christian life of the departed. He said Mrs. Thornthwaite had the secret of "growing old beautifully". The Baptist choir, with Mrs. M.E. McCausland at the organ sang the hymns, "Near to the Heart of God" and "Peace, Perfect Peace". Those attending from a distance included ... ...
