Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 12, 2013, at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Arlington, SD. Pastor Brian Reicke will officiate. Music will be provided by Shirley Olson as organist with Pat Anderson as soloist. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. on Monday at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Pallbearers will be: Johnny Rider, Patrick Riley, Lucy Vandersnick, Christopher Rider, Kaylene Rider and Dr. Grant Anderson. Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Monday. Lois Arnold Kuester was born on August 9, 1919, to Ben and Phoebe (Arnold) Kuester at Hazel, SD. She attended grade school at Kittelson and Brantford #4 rural one room schools. She graduated from Hazel High School in 1937. Many times she would ride her horse or walk the four miles to school. In 1941, Lois graduated from the Bartron School of Nursing in Watertown. Following graduation, she was a surgical nurse at the Bartron Hospital and also worked at St. Barnabas Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, as the night supervisor of the maternity department. She was an instructor in the Cadet Nurse Corps and during WWII, enlisted as a Red Cross nurse and taught home nursing for two years to women of the community. She also helped start the blood bank in the area. On October 28, 1945, Lois married Donald Evan Rider at Trinity Episcopal Church in Watertown. The couple lived on the Rider homestead west of Hazel. On June 1, 1968, Lois returned to nursing as assistant director of nursing at the Parkview Care Center in Bryant, SD, which opened that day. She worked there for 18 ½ years, the last six years as director of nursing. She was also chairman of the operating board of the care center. Donald passed away on Feb. 11, 1983. On January 26, 1985, Lois married Gene Field at DeSmet, SD. They lived in DeSmet and Lake Poinsett until making their permanent home on the farm at Hazel in 1992. Lois and Gene were founding members of Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Arlington where Lois served as deaconess and held various positions in the women's' group. Gene passed away on February 8, 2009. Lois continued to be very active in her church, including teaching Sunday school. She was also active in nursing organizations and attended workshops to keep current with nursing in the area of gerontology. She was a member of the Happy Homemakers Extension Club for 40 years. Lois enjoyed working with the elderly and their families. In 1984, the nurses' association recognized her as a qualified geriatric nurse and hospice nurse. Lois is survived by three children: Jon (Dianne) Rider, Hazel, Karla Robbins (Ray Baker), Guernsey, WY, and Lou Ann (Skip) Jungemann, Sioux Falls; one daughter-in-law, Mary (Duane) Aldrich, Brookings; five grandchildren: Johnny (Audrey) Rider, Henry, Lucy (Tony) Vandersnick, Vienna, Patrick Riley, Sioux Falls, and Christopher Rider and Kaylene Rider, Minneapolis, MN; five great-grandchildren; five step children: Virginia (Roger) Walline, Sioux Falls, Patricia (Lyle) Anderson, Volga, James (Vickie) Field, Brookings, Dayle (Brad) Reynolds, Leavenworth, KS, and Douglas (Becky) Field, Craig, CO; 12 step grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Helen Field, Hot Springs; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald Rider and Gene Field; one son, Terry Rider; two sons-in-law, Don Robbins and Jim Riley; her parents; one sister, Eunice Johnson; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
