Born December 8, 1920 in Arbuckle, Calif. to almond growers, Olive Cockerill Locke and Horace Joseph Locke, Lois was preceded in death by her first husband, John Harold Strong, by her second husband, Lt. Born December 8, 1920 in Arbuckle, Calif. to almond growers, Olive Cockerill Locke and Horace Joseph Locke, Lois was preceded in death by her first husband, John Harold Strong, by her second husband, Lt. Comdr. La Rue M. Travaillie (USNR). Lois was the oldest and last surviving child of three Locke family children (all daughters): Lois, Lorraine Locke Struckmeyer and Lousie Locke Johnson. In Colusa County the sisters were known as "The Three L's." Loving survivors include her three children from her first marriage: Katherine Strong Lee of Evergreen, Colo.; Steven Locke Strong of Tulsa, Okla.; and Virginia Strong Fry of Steamboat Springs, Colo. and by grandchildren Darren John Lee, Christopher Byron Lee, Kevin James Lee, Kyle Locke Strong, Elizabeth Maurine Whitmore and William Parker Fry; and by seven great-grandchildren. Lois graduated from Pierce Joint Union High School in Arbuckle, studied at UC Berkeley, and earned a Registered Nursing degree from the University of California in San Francisco. At Berkeley she was a member of Phi Omega Pi sorority. In 1950 Lois and her husband, John, moved to Walnut Creek to raise their kids. Corporate relocations and transitions later took the family to Salt Lake City, Tulsa, Atlanta and then back to Sacramento in 1971. In Walnut Creek, by volunteering to run a Walnut Festival First Aid station for the Red Cross, Lois found a passion that led to over 50 years of American Red Cross service and provided a remarkable late life career, an active retirement, and numerous friendships. In Salt Lake City Lois volunteered with Red Cross Blood Services. In Tulsa she served as a Red Cross instructor for home nursing, home and mother care. On returning to Sacramento, after a refresher course and earning a Public Health Nurse endorsement, Lois became Director of Nursing Services for the Sacramento Sierra Chapter of Red Cross, a position she held until she retired in 1985. In retirement Lois volunteered for Red Cross disaster work and helped hurricane victims in Kauai, Florida and Louisiana; fire victims in the Western U.S.; tornado victims in Alabama and Oklahoma and earthquake victims in northern and southern California. Lois Strong was a devoted wife, caring mother and a nurse that would have made Florence Nightingale proud. Services at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 15th at Faith Presbyterian Church, 625 Florin Road, Sacramento. Family memorial Arbuckle cemetery.
