Her funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial: Springfield Cemetery near Delta. Vannest was born March 19, 1908, in Mahaska County to William and Bessie Denney Hicklin. She married Ivan Vannest on Dec 25, 1927, near Rose Hill. He died July 6, 1992. During the Great Depression Lois worked for the W.P.A. cutting timber. Later she and Ivan farmed on their own farm north of Rose Hill for many years. Lois was a member of Indianapolis Christian Church and the Loyal Neighbors club. She loved the outdoors, especially traveling, gardening and taking fishing trips to Minnesota. She is survived by her son-in-law, Harlan Middlekauff of What Cheer; a sister-in-law, Vera Hicklin of Oskaloosa; a grandson and wife: Larry and Deb Middlekauff of Janesville; a granddaughter, Lois L. Middlekauff and Mike Kepple of Waverly; three great-grandchildren: Amanda Boots, Brian Middlekauff and Jason Middlekauff. Besides her husband, Lois was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Virginia Middlekauff; and three brothers, Dwight, Paul and Forrest Hicklin. Oskaloosa Herald paper 3/7/2002
