Description	:	Lois Katherine Thompson was born July 7, 1904 in Canon City, Colorado, the daughter of Richard Barker Thompson and Mattie Henshaw. She came to Nevada as a young girl, and graduated from Winnemucca High School. She also attended San Jose State University and Nevada Normal School, and earned a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. In 1931 she married Andrew Isaac Allen and took... Read More	Lois Katherine Thompson was born July 7, 1904 in Canon City, Colorado, the daughter of Richard Barker Thompson and Mattie Henshaw. She came to Nevada as a young girl, and graduated from Winnemucca High School. She also attended San Jose State University and Nevada Normal School, and earned a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. A devoted educator, she had worked as a teacher for the majority of her adult life. She began teaching in Orovada, Nevada, and later taught at the Allen Ranch in Carlin, and in Beowawe. In 1931 she married Andrew Isaac Allen and took an 18-year hiatus from teaching. Together the couple operated a general store in Beowawe, and upon moving to Sparks in 1945, opened up Allen's Market. She returned to teaching in 1949, serving as teacher and principal at Sun Valley Elementary until 1970. In 1991 Lois Allen Elementary School, named in her honor, was opened in Sun Valley. At the time of her death, Lois was president and general manager of the Allen-Mink Corporation in Sparks, which specialized in residential and commercial rentals. She was a member of the Washoe Unit of the Nevada Retired Teacher's Association, a 75-year member of the San Jose Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the oldest continuous member of the United Methodist Church of Sparks. Survivors included a son, Harry Allen; a daughter, Shirley Mink; three grandsons, one granddaughter, seven great-grandsons, one great-granddaughter, three nephews, one niece, a sister-in-law, and good friend and employee Phyllis Pete.
