Lois L. Carstensen was born on Nov. 23, 1938, to Marion and Lola (Brown) Potter in Long Pine. Lois was a “tomboy from the start," preferring outdoor and sports activities including riding her horse to the one-room school just inside the Nebraska border near Wewela, South Dakota. She attended Rock County High School in Bassett, graduating in 1956. She then joined the Women's Army Corps. She was stationed at the Pentagon, and worked as an expediting secretary followed by a civilian stint at Boys Town in Omaha. Her strong love of country and the military continued throughout her life. She married in 1959, and had three sons, Rodney, Roger and Rich. Following brief moves to Wyoming, O'Neill, Plainview, and Schuyler, the family settled in Columbus where she lived for the remainder of her life. Lois worked at Becton-Dickinson for 30 years, developing strong and lasting friendships. She retired in 1998, and enjoyed sports, exercise, painting pottery, family, and friends. She played fast and slow pitch softball for many years, and excelled on the pitcher's mound. Lois was proud to have participated in the Columbus Downtown Run-around for 31 years. In retirement, she worked at AnyTime Fitness and enjoyed her many friendships there. She was a quiet, helpful and loyal inspiration to many. She is survived by her three children, Rod Carstensen (wife, Sandi) of Denver; and three grandchildren, Andrew (Lynchburg, Virginia), Molly (Denver), and Jake (Boulder, Colorado); Roger Carstensen (wife, Kim) of Lake Havasu, Arizona, and one grandchild, Sean (Fort Collins, Colorado); and Rich Carstensen of Columbus; her brother, Duane Potter (wife, Florence) of Columbus, and sister, Janice Logan of Norfolk. Lois was pre-deceased by her parents, Marion and Lola Potter.
