Lois Marie Gilbertson was born on Saturday, June 4, 1921 to Alfred and Clara (Christianson) Gilbertson at Roslyn, SD. She was raised in Eden and attended high school there. When the Eden school closed, Lois graduated as an honor student from Webster High School in 1940. She attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and received a teaching certificate. She began her teaching career in a one room country school near Eden. When World War II broke out, Lois and her sister, Marliss journeyed to San Francisco, CA, to support the war effort as "Rosie the Riveter" gals, working in various shipyards and munitions plants. At war's end she returned to South Dakota and married her high school sweetheart, James Sherman of Sisseton, SD. They were married on May 3, 1946. To this union were born two children, Terry and Julie. Lois and Jim settled in Roslyn, SD, in 1954. Jim passed away in August 1995. After his death she remained in Roslyn until her death. She was active in the Roslyn Lutheran Church, was a poll watcher for many elections, worked at the Roslyn post office, active in the American Legion Auxiliary, taught country school near Roslyn, was a kindergarten teacher and was a gracious wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed crosswords, golfing, dancing, singing, baking lefse, bicycling, attending events of her children and grandchildren, and morning coffee with neighborhood ladies. After a decade and a half of courageous struggle with Alzheimer's disease, Lois passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at Strand-Kjorsvig Community Rest Home in Roslyn, SD, at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 29 days. In addition to her children, Terry J. Sherman and Julie (Milt) Bradford both of Rapid City, SD; she is survived by a sister, Marliss Brewster of Webster, SD; two grandchildren, Rebecca Wojahn of Spearfish, SD, and Christopher Wojahn of Wilton, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
