Read More	Lois Dunn was born at Iowa Falls, Iowa on Nov. 27, 1868. She died at Hartley Iowa on her birthday early in the morning of Nov. 27, 1958. She was truly a pioneer of this area. Her father and mother, Henry and Mary Woodward, moved with a family of five children to Elk Point, SD, then to a farm near Beresford, SD when they were still quite young. She liked to tell of the great flood on the Missouri River and the great blizzard of 1888. The Woodward family then moved to a farm near Dell Rapids, SD and while they were there she enrolled in one of the earliest classes in the new general beadle Normal School at Madison, SD. She was married to Moncena Dunn in 1981 and as the station agent they went to live at Summit, SD, a station established on the recently built extension of the Milwaukee Road (Note: Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul RailRoad). When the "Sisseton and Wahpeton" Reservation was opened for settlement they took up a claim adjacent to the Town of Summit, built a small claim shanty and here her two children Everett and Wendell were born. When the boys were very young it was necessary for her to assume the complete responsibility for making a living for them and, with the courage and fortitiude that was to be hers throughout her entire life, she succeeded in giving them a high school education and in encouraging the idea that they must go on and complete their education in college. These sons freely admit that it was this encouragement and insistence which kept them at work until they succeeded in obtaining their degrees. In 1906 with her sister Ella and a son she went into North Dakota and took up another claim near Steele. With their children these two women lived through a bitter North Dakota winter in small claim shanties. But they were able to prove up on their claims and became owners. It was such hardiness and endurance which undoubtedly made it possible for her to live to the age of 90. Although she was not a member of a church she was nevertheless a woman of high principal and fine character and emanded of her sons the strictest adherence to habits of sobriety, truthfulness and good morals. Her friends in the Northwest part of South Dakota were many all bound together with the spirit of helpfulness and the careful life which they were required to live. She was particulary active in the Order of the Eastern Star and she was very proud of being honored as a fifty year and life member of the Wilmot Chapter. In later years she preferred to live alone and this she did until her failing health made it necessary for her to have attention and care. She never freely accepted the idea that she was not able to attend entirely to her own needs and the day before she passed away her mind was intent upon the time when she could return to her old friends and home at Summit. She leaves to mourn her two sons, Everett and Wendell; six grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Lottie Grove of Austin, Texas; and a brother Ira Woodward of Riverton, Age 92; and a brother Charles of Summit, SD, age 86. Funeral services were conducted at the Foley Funeral Home on Saturday, November 30, at 12:00 Noon by the reverend Raymond A. Roloff, pastor of the Methodist church, who also held committal services at the cemetery at Brookings, SD at 3:30 in the afternoon.
