Peabody, Esq., aged 35 years and 6 months. Once more has the last great conqueror of mortality invaded our neighboring circle and claimed a victim as its own. We do not intend in these few lines to eulogise the departed, but as an early associate, a friend, a neighbor, justice to her memory demands that we briefly note some of the many excellencies of her nature. At an early period in life, she connected herself with the Methodist church, of which she has ever been a worthy and useful member. Modest and unassuming, in her every relation in life, she won the esteem of all, within the circle of her acquaintance. Thus by this mysterious, yet just and wise Providence, has a kind husband been bereft of one of his early choice, with whom he vainly hoped for length of days; but:--- "Oh blindness to the future, kindly given That each may fill the circle, marked by Heaven." Earth was not her abiding home, he who gave her, has but taken his own treasure, lent a while, to be removed in his own time, that we may learn the fallacy of hope; for--- "There is no union here of hearts, That finds not here an end." A son, a daughter, in their youthful days, are deprived of a tender mother's counsel; but he who hears the orphan's cry will not be unmindful of their every want. Parents mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate daughter; brothers and sisters of a loving gentle sister; but may they feel that he who hath lain his hand so heavily upon them, "doth not willingly afflict nor grieve the children of men," but--- "Behind a frowning Providence He hides a smiling face." Friends and neighbors join in one common grief, that one so good, so pure, surrounded by all that makes life desirable, should thus early pass away. The autumn winds chant mournfully a requiem o'er her low resting place; yet amid this gloom thee arises from the dark recesses of the tomb, a gentle whisper, "would ye recall me to this world of changes again? the grave has no dominion over me; here tears are wiped from off all faces, and sighing and sorrow are known no more." "Soft are my slumbers, peaceful my rest, Freed from the earthly, repose on the breast Of Him who unfettered this casket of clay; Loved ones, weep not, I'll greet you in infinite day." Rest on, thou loved one, thine is a hallowed sleep, for "There is a world above, Where parting is unknown; A whole eternity of love, And blessedness alone; And faith beholds the dying here, Transplanted to that happier sphere."
