Soladay, age 94, of Fulton, SD died Monday, March 8, 2021 at the Corsica Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 12 noon Saturday, March 13, 2021 followed by a prayer service at 12 noon with burial at Graceland Cemetery in Fulton, SD. Lois Licht was born August 26, 1926 to Arthur and Wanda (Ehrlichman) Licht. She grew up and received her education in Fulton, SD. Lois worked as a telegrapher and depot agent at Fulton and Farmer during World War II. She went to work at what was then Fulton State Bank after the war. Lois was united in marriage with Glenn E. “Doc” Soladay after he returned from serving in the US Army in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. They made their home in Ft. Sill, OK for a short time. Then Doc and Lois returned to Fulton where they raised their 2 daughters and lived the rest of their lives. Lois was a gifted and intuitive bookkeeper, starting that work when she became secretary for the Fulton School Board. She took the job, thinking she wouldn’t like it, to pay for Mary’s orthodontia. Then she stayed on when it turned enjoyed both the work and the neighbors who served on the board. She drove to countless piano and violin lessons, saw to it that her girls practiced, and worked to pay for instruments. After Doc became the Fulton postmaster, Lois became the clerk. He was management, she was labor; when they were at work, it was all business and harmony. Between them, they served the Fulton community in the post office for about 60 years. No one ever enjoyed or cherished colleagues more than they did their fellow postal workers, like Ruth Pommer and Lydell Smith. Faith and church were central to Lois’s life. She was a member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Alexandria, SD for a lifetime. She served as church organist, sang for many weddings and funerals (not her favorite thing because she had stage fright but did it anyway), served as a Sunday School and Confirmation teacher, and worked in the Ladies’ Aid all her active years. She became involved with the work of the Lutheran relief agency Orphan Grain Train, when Doc travelled to Latvia for a Grain Train project right after the fall of the Soviet Union. They were active members of the local American Legion Post and Auxiliary, then known as Fulton/Farmer/Epiphany American Legion Post #85. Doc and Lois were blessed with the world’s best friends and neighbors in the church, town of Fulton, postal service and American Legion. Lois was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws, Earl and Minnie Soladay; her husband Doc; sister and brother-in-law Marna and Chester Taylor; a half brother Herb. She is survived by daughter Liz Soladay of Fulton, and daughter and son-in-law Mary and Dan Wipf of Mitchell. She is also survived by cherished nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. There are no words to express our thanks to Dr. Luebke and the staff of the Corsica Good Samaritan for their professional competence and personal compassion during the years they cared for Lois. Dear folks, our mom never cared for funeral flowers.
