Lola Louise Voss was born October 5, 1952 at Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, IA, one of five daughters born to Earl H. and Alvina (Johnson) Voss. She was raised on a family farm south of Little Rock and in 1976 her family moved to their current home in Little Rock. Lola was diagnosed as mentally handicapped and was faithfully cared for by her mother, her entire life. She was baptized on November 9, 1952 at Salem Reformed Church in Little Rock. She always carried a Cheerios box with her. Lola touched all our lives in one way or another over the years. She taught us never to fear a handicapped person, rather to embrace them. She is survived by her four sisters, Marlys Kruse of Little Rock, IA, Arlys (Pete) Boekhout of Platte City, MO, Mary Hodge of Williamsville, NY, and Earleen (Sam) Chase of Sibley, IA; a special Aunt, Marie Bruns of Sibley, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl H. Voss; and most recently her mother, Alvina “Nina” Voss. ------------------------------- What my Aunt Lola Taught me…. You’re never too old to enjoy a ride on a swing. Sitting in a car is nice, even if it’s not moving. Little people are annoying, but big people are too. You can get your point across without ever saying a word. Drinking one sip at a time is a waste of time. Bad hair days are a myth. Like the mighty crow, we need to keep our items accumulated daily in our nest (bed). With a full box of Kleenex, you can make your very own snowdrift in the summer. A drawer makes a handy step stool in the kitchen (see below). Go ahead and put something where you think I can’t find it or reach it…we’ll see…. Sometimes, you just have to be alone…a dark corner of the basement or a wardrobe works well. Leaning against the heat register or sitting in the window seat in the middle of winter is AWESOME!! A nice cracker or cookie can always brighten your day. Company is overrated…. It’s the little things in life…..a book or a ball is no replacement for a cheerios box. There’s never a wrong time for a nap. If something that you don’t like crosses your path, put a pillow over your head and hope it goes away. I’m mom AND dad’s favorite….get used to it. And the greatest thing that Lola taught me…Nothing, short of the love of God, exists on this earth that is more important, more powerful, more awe-inspiring or more necessary than a mother’s love.
