Lola passed away on April 29, 2010, at the Madrid Nursing Home in Madrid, where she has been a resident for the past five years. Lola Marie Frad, the eldest daughter of twelve children born to Robert and Ellen (Nellie) Frad formerly of Greenville, was born on July 31, 1920, near Dickens. She received her education in country schools in the Dickens/Greenville area. She was united in marriage to Harold Herrin in Spencer in 1939. Following their marriage, they lived in the community of Gillett Grove. One son, Darrell Warren Herrin, was born to this union in 1941. Lola worked at a variety of jobs during her lifetime to assist her family's income. During World War II, she worked in St. Paul, Minn., at a factory baking cookies for C-rations for the soldiers. In 1946, she was united in marriage to Lee Pelley of Linn Grove. After spending two years in Oakland, Calif., they settled in Linn Grove for the next 25 years. Two children were born to this union, Dennis Lee Pelley in 1947 and Denice Doreen Pelley in 1953. Lola cooked for the Sioux Valley Community School district in Linn Grove for over 12 years. She was well known for her delicious homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, pies and cakes. Lola was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Riverside Presbyterian Church, the Ladies Aide Society, and was a janitor of the church for many years. A woman of many talents, she worked at a variety of other jobs in the Linn Grove area, including helping in the local library, manning the switchboard as a telephone operator during the early 1950s, waitressing at the old Bringleson Café on main street, and was always ready to lend a hand as "beautician" doing permanent waves for her neighbors, family and friends. Always a great supporter of her children in their many pursuits, she was a regular attendee of all their music and sports activities in school. When time permitted, she loved entertaining, baking, sewing and reading her favorite Zane Grey westerns. While living in Spencer in 1974, she met and married Vance Hanson. For over 25 years they thoroughly enjoyed their life together, filling it with friends, bowling, square dancing, camping, and traveling. They were members of the Hope Reformed Church and the Spencer Squares. They lived in the Spencer and Ruthven area, where Lola worked at Bjornstad Drug, Superior Manufacturing, Bradley Shoe Store, Star Drug and at the Clay County Fair in Spencer before retiring and moving to the Alamo, Texas, area where they enjoyed their "snowbird" life of traveling between Texas and Slater. Lola is survived by her three children: Darrell and Judy Herrin of Ankeny, Mike and Denice (Pelley) Feekes of Slater, and Dennis and Lorraine Pelley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren; Dan and Shelley Herrin of Pleasant Hill, Jeff Herrin and Colleen Martin Herrin of Cambridge, Alex and Stacy (Herrin) Polewik of Huxley, Holli (Herrin) Miller of Bondurant, Rich and Lisa (Pelley) Huber of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kelvin and Karen (Pelley) Langford of Colorado Springs, Colo., Josh and Jennie (Feekes) O'Donnell of Mt. Pleasant, and Dominic and Alicia (Feekes) Roufs of Slater; 16 great-grandchildren; six sisters: Norma Frad of Urbandale, Bob and Charlene (Frad) Giles of Ankeny, Chuck and Mary (Frad) Wickstrom of Ankeny, Betty (Frad) Read of Urbandale, Will and Pat (Frad) Ledingham of Urbandale, and Joe and Esther (Frad) Brown of Peshastin, Wash.; three sisters-in-law: Susan Frad of Seattle, Wash., Marjorie Frad and Gladys Zweifel -- both of Spencer; and also three stepdaughters and their children. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; and all five of her brothers: Everett, Clyde, Leonard, Bobby and Chuck Frad. Memorial contributions may be made to the Madrid Home, 613 W. North St., Madrid, Iowa.
