Born the oldest of five children to George and Bertha Hackett at the Hackett Ranch on Howe Creek, Lorene learned independence at an early age. At the age of seven, she boarded with her grandparents, George and Laura McAlister in order to attend school. During her high school years, she boarded in town and worked cooking and maintaining the households of several families including the Earlys, Bartletts, and the Flowers. She also cared for Brian and Brett Davie when they were very young. She loved children. "I always wanted to be a mom," she said. The great granddaughter of pioneer settlers of Ferndale, she never lived outside Humboldt County, marrying Jack Tipple Jr. in 1945 and raising four children of her own on Centerville Road. Outside of homemaking she worked as a cook at Ferndale High School and a clerk for the Humboldt Co. Fair. When her children had grown she volunteered at Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna and was a "Pink Lady" there for 10 years. Lorene was an active member of the Eel River Orchid Society, an avid quilter and loved to garden. She enjoyed volunteering at the Ferndale Museum. Lorene was a founding member of the Monday Scrabble Group which continued for over 20 years. Reading was an important daily pleasure throughout her life. After becoming ill, she adapted to reading "e-books" on a Kindle as it was less heavy to hold than a 600 page hard cover biography of Harry Truman. For the past 10 years, Lorene and Jack have been active members of the Fortuna Methodist Church. Prior to that they were with the Ferndale Community Church. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Jack Tipple Jr., and her children Jack Tipple III, Jill Dedini, and Joel Tipple. Her son Jay Tipple died December 31, 2010. Lorene is also survived by sisters Pat Walker, Charlotte Michel, Jeannette Leonardo and brother George Hackett. She leaves seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her many friends and cousins. The family thanks those who offered prayers and support during her illness. Special thanks go to son-in-law, Lee Dedini and daughter-in-law, Lynnette Tipple and to Connie Davies. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Fortuna Methodist Church, 10th and N streets, Fortuna. The family suggests "in memory of" donations to Hospice of Humboldt.
