Lorine Mardell (Walter) Smith was born May 22, 1920 at Chambers, NE, to Alfred Adam Walter and Ruth Lena (Peltzer) Walter. Lorine married Wayne Smith on December 31, 1941 at the Presbyterian parsonage in O’Neill. They were blessed with 2 children; Allen Dean on September 28, 1943 and Judy Clare on March 1, 1945. They moved to O’Neill in 1979. In 1980, they were saddened by the loss of Judy, and they extended their home to her 6 children. Lorine received her early education at Valley Center School. She graduated from Chambers High School in 1937. In the summer of 1938, she started training for teaching at Wayne State College. After 1 year, she received a General Elementary teaching certificate, and the next 2 years, she taught at Chambers. She completed her 2 years in Wayne by 1950, then went to the University of Nebraska and graduated in 1964 with an endorsement in Special Education and Elementary Education. Lorine taught Ermer School from 1957 to 1958. She was offered a job in O’Neill Public School in 1958. She accepted and taught 1st grade for 1 year, 3rd grade for 5 years, and was special education teacher and coordinator from 1963 through 1968. In 1968, she began working at educational Service Unit #8 as a Special Education Consultant, a job she held until retiring in the spring of 1981. Aside from her love of teaching, Lorine experienced all of the joy of farm work- hoeing cockleburs, milking cows, working in the hay field and whatever else was needed. Lorine is survived her grandchildren; Shannon (Nelly) Putnam of San Diego, CA, Sean (Julie) Putnam of Lincoln, NE, Tara Putnam of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Shane Putnam of Poulbso, WA, Kara (Margot) Putnam of Seattle, WA, Shea (Katie) Putnam of Dallas, TX, Ruth Smith, of Kearney, NE, Mike Smith, of Kearney, NE, 9 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson.
