Lorna Wilhemine Maria Anna Bargmann was born Nov. 17, 1923, at the family homestead southwest of Hannover, the daughter of Henry Herman and Emma (Rabe) Bargmann. Pastor Val Kern baptized her on Dec. 16, 1923, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hannover. Lorna was confirmed on March 23, 1937, also at St. Peter's by Pastor Louis Wohlfeil. She attended rural elementary schools in the Hannover area and graduated from St. Peter's Lutheran School. Lorna graduated from New Salem High School in May of 1941. She attended Dickinson State Teachers College for several summers and graduated with a rural teaching degree on June 3, 1955, a standard teaching degree on Dec. 2, 1955, and a bachelor of science degree in elementary education on Aug. 3, 1962. She began her teaching career in the fall of 1943 in the Pleasant Valley School District in Oliver County, after passing the county teaching test. Lorna taught for 15 years in the rural schools of Oliver and Morton counties. She also taught for three years at White Shield. After completing her bachelor's degree, she began teaching second grade in Mandan. She retired in May of 1985, after teaching 23 years in Mandan. Lorna was very active in her church, Messiah Lutheran in Mandan. Through the Lutheran Womans' Missionary League at Messiah, she worked on numerous banners and often provided flowers to be used at the church. She was an avid gardener, had a large vegetable garden and many flowers around her home. She also loved quilting and designed many quilts for relatives. These included quilts for the newborns, children, young adults and newlyweds. She was an active member of many professional organizations, including the Mandan Education Association, The North Dakota Education Association, and the National Education Association. After retirement, she was involved with the Retired Teachers organization. She is survived by three brothers, Albert, William and Hilbert, all of Hannover; one sister, Caroline Letzring, Alta, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jean Lathrop. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Alma Bargmann, Eleanora Reiner and Louise Fleischer.
