Penney Co., died Saturday in Mary Washington Hospital. Mrs. Bennett was the third saleswoman to be hired when Penney's first opened on Caroline Street, which at that time was paved with cobblestones. During her 38 years with Penney's, the store was nearly flooded in 1937 and in 1942 the water was with nine inches of the countertops. At her retirement ceremony in 1962, Mrs. Bennett recalled working by the light of candles and lanterns during the floods. She also saw the store expand twice and move to new locations. A year after her retirement, Mrs. Bennett began working as a companion-aide at Mary Washington Hospital. She had been a member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church since 1908, and was a member of the church's Willis Philathea Sunday school class. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lucille B. Johnson of Fredericksburg and Mrs. Charlotte B. Carter of Triangle; one brother, W. Herman Walker of Suffolk; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fredericksburg Baptist Church, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. J. Howard Cates will officiate. Pallbearers will be W. H. Walker, Jr., Howard T. Walker, Chilton Walker, Samuel E. Perry, David Holland, Calvin Critzer and Lother E. Dodd. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Fredericksburg Baptist Church building fund.
