Mrs. Armstrong, who was known as "Aunt Lou" was born Jan. 28. 1879. in Highland, a daughter of Joseph and Amanda Siron Siple. She was the last survivor of her immediate family and was the widow of J.H. Armstrong, who died in 1948. Surviving are two sons. Joe Arch Armstrong of Deerfield and Brad Clifton Armstrong of McDowell; three stepsons. Dennis Armstrong of Covington, Wallace Armstrong of Lansdale, Pa., and Don Armstrong of McDowell. Armstrong, Aviation Machinist's Mate Second-class, U.S. Navy, McDowell, Virginia, has returned to the United States for reassignment after a tour of duty with a Navy search plane squadron in the North Pacific. Flying in Ventures from bases in the Aleutians, members of the unit patrolled the Northern sea lanes and staged a series of harassing rocket raids against Japanese installations in the Kuriles, strafing radio stations, canneries and other enemy targets. Armstrong, 24 years old, says his most thrilling combat experience was when he strafed some Japs in a whale boat. He was plane captain and gunner on a Venture. The McDowell air-crewman is a son of Jacob H. Armstrong.
